what is autism?

1 in 59 have autism.  60,000 individuals with autism live in Michigan.  1,000 school aged children with autism live in Genesee County.

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. It affects development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Autism is a spectrum disorder and it affects each individual differently and at varying degrees.  Early intervention is critical.  For more information on autism, please visit Autism Alliance of Michigan.
